Gulf WildOur Story. Seafood with Certainty

Welcome to Gulf Wild branded seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. We’re setting the standard for genuine, responsibly-caught and safety tested seafood and we’ve made it all trackable back to the accountable fishermen who bring it in. That’s just the beginning. Our uniquely numbered gill tag on every Gulf Wild fish tracks it all: Who harvested your fish, from where within the expansive Gulf waters, even at what port your fish landed. And we put it all on this website for the world to see.

Conceived by working Gulf fishermen to ensure confidence in their catch, our Gulf Wild label ensures that your grouper, snapper, and other seafood came from a well-monitored and continuously improving fishery under innovative catch share management plans.

fishfaceOUR COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION As a “by the fishermen, for the fishermen” organization, Gulf Wild is committed to providing true thought leadership on stewardship issues in the Gulf. That’s part of what it means to be “on the hook.” Our Conservation Standards Committee serves as the channel marker to ensure that Gulf Wild stays on course and true to our mission of empowering seafood sustainability and fishery conservation. They provide guidance and oversight of all our conservation actions, including managing changes in our Conservation Covenants, adding new species and updating traceability standards.

fishoniceThe committee, along with our fishermen and vessel owners, are proud to be 100% accountable for their adherence to our Conservation Covenants approach—a two-tiered program developed exclusively to ensure ongoing improvement in the Gulf of Mexico’s fisheries. “Base Accountability” represents the bare minimum required to ensure a healthy, productive future for the Gulf. “Above and Beyond Accountability is meant to raise the bar for sustainable fishery practices: the rising tide that helps to raise all boats.

Base accountability includes compliance with all current national and international regulations, including:

  • The Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Management Plan and amendments
  • Science-based quota
  • Gear restrictions and area closures to reduce sea turtle interactions
  • Compliance with federal observer program
  • Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) requirements, including active IFQ accounts to catch, hold, land, and sell and/or transport fish
  • Monitoring/enforcement, including fishing call-in/call-out to federal authorities, 24/7 vessel monitoring, random checks by enforcement officers

ABOVE AND BEYOND ACCOUNTABILITY The Shareholders Alliance commissioned a revealing pre-assessment of groupers, tilefish and red snapper against the Marine Stewardship Council’s standards. Not satisfied with the results, the Alliance developed a regulatory solution plan for Fishery Improvement Projects (FIP) to address the identified issues, with the help of participating Gulf Wild vessels and fishermen. Regulations include:

  • No intentionally discarded low-value fish for higher-value fish
  • No discard of any target fish (except where required by regulations, such as minimum size limits)
  • Implementation of the Gulf Wild voluntary video monitoring program (where available) with full on-board video monitoring to compliance with conservation covenants and fishing regulations. Note: As the first in the Gulf to video monitor, our goal is to demonstrate that the system can and should be implemented fleet-wide.
  • Participation in Shareholders Alliance and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research projects to establish better data collection for reef fish stock assessments, including discarding and mortality rates.

fishermanAdditionally, all Gulf Wild participants (fishermen, vessels, owners, fish houses) participate in periodic voluntary audits to verify adherence to our Conservation Covenants, verification requirements, and food safety testing protocols. As our last step in the process, our supply chain partners who wish to participate also agree to an annual review and periodic audits to ensure all standards and practices are met.
